Risk Management Rounds
Pediatrics

Overview

The most common reason behind malpractice claims against pediatricians is diagnostic errors.  Conditions cited include meningitis, appendicitis, congenital anomalies, and brain damage.  The second most common reason is alleged improper performance of procedures including diagnostic interviews and consultations, nonoperative procedures, prescriptions, general physical examinations and injections and vaccinations.  Pediatricians should know how to avoid these errors, and that’s why this course was developed.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1. Analyze a case scenario to determine whether it meets the criteria for malpractice.
2. Discuss four communication factors that often contribute to malpractice claims against pediatricians.
3. Name the characteristics of a defensible medical record.
4. Recognize risks associated with office and hospital practice.
5. Identify and avoid risks associated with informed consent and confidentiality in pediatric practice.
