This course is designed for anesthesiologists, pain medicine specialists and other practitioners of anesthesiology, including nurse anesthetists, who want to sharpen their risk management skills.

Overview

Ongoing analyses of malpractice cases suggest that the injuries most likely to result in suits are wrongful death, severe brain damage, and spinal-nerve damage— just the type of injuries most often associated with claims against anesthesiologists. 

 

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:


1. Analyze a case scenario to determine whether the four elements of malpractice are present.
2. Name and suggest ways to avoid six common but preventable malpractice claims.
3. Discuss the role of CRNAs in risk management.

 

Target Audience

This course is designed for anesthesiologists and others who administer anesthesia. 

 

Methodology

This is a self-study course consisting of text and CME test.  Physicians should read the course content, answer the test questions and submit the answers for scoring.  Those who complete the course with a score of 80 percent or higher will earn a maximum of 5 AMA PRA Category 1 creditsTM.
